What we want govt to do to end strike — ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to show concrete evidence of commitment to agreements on meeting its demands on its ongoing strike.. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, said in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the union would communicate its decision on offers made by the government on Tuesday. Mr Ogunyemi, a professor, said contrary to some media reports, the union did not reject the offer made by the Federal Government or make fresh demands. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, after meeting with the union on Jan. 4 said government was about resolving the dispute with the lecturers who embarked on strike on Nov. 5, 2018. Mr Ngige said the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant- General of the Federation had provided evidence that N15.4 billion for the payment of salary shortfall in public universities. Accident claims three lives in Ondo

Three people on Wednesday morning lost their lives in a fatal auto crash in Ondo State. The crash occurred around Olokuta axis of the Ondo – Akure highway which is few minutes drive from the Akure, the Ondo State capital. The accident involved a black Toyota Corolla Sport car with number plate FGB 940 AA and a blue truck with number plate LND 274 XP. An eyewitness told DAILY POST that the accident was caused by overspeeding by the driver of the Toyota Corolla who while on top speed tried to overtake another vehicle before colliding with a truck coming from the opposite direction. He also narrated that poor visibility might be responsible for the crash, which he said was due to the early morning fog on the busy road. The victims involved were occupants of the Toyota Corolla which included a man, a woman as well as a boy suspected to be of the same family. Police Arrest Suspected Killers Of Ekiti Assembly Lawmaker, Michael Adedeji

The Police Command in Ekiti State said on Tuesday that it had arrested a six-man robbery gang that allegedly killed Michael Adedeji, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state House of Assembly. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adedeji, who until his murder was representing Ekiti Southwest Constituency (II), was shot in the head by the hoodlums on Aug. 10, 2018. The suspected bandits, who police said, had already made confessional statements were paraded by the new Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Asuquo Amba, in Ado Ekiti. The suspects, according to the CP, also allegedly killed one Kayode Omowaye when they raided OJAS Pleasure Hotels in Oye Ekiti on Aug. 10, 2018. Parading the suspects, the CP gave names of those arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Adedeji as Dele Obamoyegun, Idowu Sunday, Adeniyi Wumi, Leye Ojo, Akindanhunsi Damilola and Olaosebikan Babatunde. Fatal accident in Iworoko Ado Ekiti as heavy duty truck looses control

The places affected in iworoko are the barbing salon behind the market women, the newly constructed shops at the market up to the pharmacy shop inside the market. All the places mentioned above are completely destroyed by the trailer speaking with a eyewitness, it was gathered that the trailer which was coming from Ifaki area was said to have lost its brake and whilst trying to use the kerbs very close to the Iworoko junction as stoppage was said to lost control and jump over to the other side of the market claiming a lot of life one akoto bus that is fully loaded with people has been clear off by the trailer and the corps are still under the trailer now not knowing  how to fetch them. The trailer enter one house and also clear off the people there. Now they are yet to device a means of fetching them out.  Also some kid playing around are said to be under the trailer now. UPDATED: Nigerian govt, ASUU reach agreement

x The Nigerian government has reached an agreement with striking university lecturers, raising the possibility of ending the teachers’ prolonged industrial action. The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU), Biodun Ogunyemi, said the National Executive Committee of the union will review its decisions based on the new commitment by the federal government. He said the strike could only be called off after the NEC meeting. He did not say when the meeting will hold. “We have had an extensive session, looking at all the issues,” he said. According to him, there are issues that will require further consultations before the union can suspend its strike. ”In view of this, government has promised to reach us as soon as possible with a written proposal on those areas we need further consultations. And when we receive that, we shall treat accordingly and get back to the appropriate quarters,” he said. The lecturers have been on strike since November ...

Strike: FG, ASUU Resume Negotiation Today

The federal government disclosed that it will resume the negotiation process with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today, with a view to putting an end to the ongoing industrial action embarked on by the striking lecturers. Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, gave the hint in a statement issued in Abuja by director of Press in the ministry, Mr Samuel Olowookere. According to the statement, the meeting is in furtherance to efforts at resolving the on-going industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). “The Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Executive of ASUU. The conciliatory meeting is scheduled to hold on Jan. 7, at Minister’s Conference Room by 30:30 pm prompt.
