A man, Felix Obisike, from Nsulu village in Isiala-Ngwa North LGA, of Abia State has been caught with already-written presidential and senatorial results sheets from the three senatorial zones in the state. Obisike was caught around the Methodist Church area in Umuahia, following information given to some political party officials, near the All Progressives Congress (APC) office. Two other men who were with him at the time, whose names were given as Gaius and Chinedu, disappeared and are now being trailed by security operatives in the state. Obisike who claimed to be a beneficiary of N-Power, a Federal government empowerment programme, said that he works with the focal person of the programme, Chinenye Nwogu. He had several other documents in his bag, including the letter head of the office of the Executive Governor of Abia State as well as already-prepared results of the presidential and senatorial elections from the three senatorial zones in the state. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections. The polls will now hold Saturday February 23. This was one of the decisions reached early Saturday morning in a meeting INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had with the 12 national commissioners in Abuja. Addressing the media at about 2:45am, Yakubu explained that the shift was mainly due to logistics problems faced by the commission. “Following a careful review, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections will not be feasible”, he said. Yakubu explained that the decision was taken in order to give the nation a free, fair and credible exercise. “Furthermore, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly and FCT elections will hold on Saturday March 9”, the electoral chief added. As journalists keep vigil at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the chief press secretary to INEC’s chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has informed the newsmen that the commission has taken a decision after a crucial meeting attended by the chairman and 12 national commissioners. Top officials of the commission had, earlier on, gone into a crucial meeting at its headquarters, following concerns that some electoral materials were destroyed in some states while also, some available electoral materials were yet to get to some other states. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday warned corps members on election duty to desist from receiving snacks and drinks from unknown persons during elections. Maj.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, NYSC Director-General, gave the warning while addressing the corps members in Gombe. Kazaure, who was represented by Mr Zakaria Alphonso, Assistant Director, Mobilisation, NYSC, Abuja, said that such gifts could harm them. “Because such items can be poisoned or flavoured with drugs that can induce sleep,” he said. He advised the corps members to make personal feeding plans and water, and make they do not over feed. “Rather, you should go along with your lunch packs to your various polling units,” the NYSC chief advised.
