A commentator in the video called out Senator Uba. Director of Media and Publicity, Senator Andy Uba Governorship Campaign Organisation (SAUGCO), Victor Afam Ogene, in a statement, said his principal was not at the scene of the alleged attack. “Our attention has been drawn to a 49-seconds trending video showing an obvious altercation between a motorist and some security personnel, allegedly at the Udoka Housing Estate, Awka. “Although the long and close-up shots of the said video had none of the vehicles in Senator Andy Uba’s convoy in view, desperate attempts are being made to drag Senator Uba into the unfortunate incident. “For us at SAUGCO, while we...

Chinedu Obigwe has declared that the Anambra electorate will not vote for APC and that all their plots to take over the state by force will fail. Speaking in Onitsha yesterday, Obigwe said nothing good will ever come out of APC in Anambra more so now that they gave their party’s ticket to Senator Andy Uba. Osimhen equals Napoli record

When Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari on Sunday, he equaled a Napoli record jointly held by Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport via casanapoli.net, the Nigeria international is the Napoli player with the most goals scored (6) after seven matches of the season, a record he shares with the Uruguay and Belgium marksmen. The 22-year-old scored a brace to help Napoli salvage a draw in their Europa League opener against Leicester City, before finding the net in three consecutive Serie A matches against Udinese, Sampdoria (2) and Cagliari. Meanwhile, former Lazio striker, Stephen Makinwa has likened Osimehn to unarguably the best African player to grace the Serie A, George Weah who enjoyed success during his spell with AC Milan. Speaking to Il Mattino via Calciomercato, the retired Nigeria international said: “I ...

Nigeria at 61: Stories for The Gods

Image
A refrain from the enjoyable and energetic lyrics of Olamide in his rave of a lifetime Story for the Gods reminds me of the moral, political and economic debauchery that has characterized the accounts of Nigeria’s existence as a nation. Now that the country is turning 61 on the first day of October 2021, there is a need to review our past and see if it can lead to a prosperous future or it is certain to end up in utter damnation. By the Civil Service Rules, a civil servant retires on turning 60, by which time he is regarded as having joined the supposedly respectable club of elderly citizens of the country. Whether there is anything respectable in the poverty-stricken life to which an average retired civil servant is condemned by the system in Nigeria is a matter for an artistic examination and portrayal by the productive film industry called Nollywood in Nigeria. But the implication is that, our nation, were it to be a civil servant, or should nations be retired upon attaining 60 ye...

Amaju wants solidarity from UEFA over World Cup plan

The president of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has called on his UEFA counterpart, Aleksander Ceferin to apologise for suggesting European countries could boycott the World Cup if FIFA’s proposals to shorten the gap between tournaments to two years are adopted. Pinnick reminded Ceferin that just under six months ago, UEFA relied on a number of organisations within the football world to support it in the face of the Super League breakaway threat.  “The Super League idea was thrown away because of solidarity, and that is the kind of solidarity we are requesting right now from UEFA. Now, he believes Europe should ‘show leadership’ and support the changes being proposed in order to help develop the game worldwide.” Pinnick told the PA news agency: “If you look at what happened, why couldn’t Juventus, AC Milan, Arsenal Manchester City form their own league? Solidarity.  “The idea was thrown away because of solidarity, and that is the kind of solidarity ...

Opabunmi counsels ex-international

Former Super Eagles’ forward, Femi Opabunmi has taken a dig at ex-international players who are constantly up in arms against administrators at the Nigeria Football Federation, insisting that most of them are misguided and clueless. “It is the responsibility of all stakeholders, including former players of the game at every level, to help strengthen the system to enable a conducive environment for the game to thrive. “I am shocked at what some of my former colleagues are doing; they threaten the system and create chaos, confusion and crisis every now and then. This negative attitude and despicable activities do not befit their status.” Opabunmi, who won FIFA U17 World Cup silver medal for Nigeria in 2001 before playing at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals in Korea/Japan, insisted that doing the hard work is the challenge for those people who believe it is easy to destroy than build, but stated that posterity will judge harshly on those who create toxicity instead of making the industry...

He advised that for the betterment of sports, particularly, Kickboxing, that he has continued to expend person resources and goodwill, as a sponsor and philanthropist, the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, should urgently wade into the matter avert this blatant injustice. Jonathan tasks NASS on e-transmission of polls results, Nigerians on security

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has challenged the National Assembly to adopt electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. He said there was no need for argument and counter-argument over whether or not election results should be transmitted especially at this digital period when people transfer huge sums of money online. He, therefore, called   members of the National Assembly to do the needful and erase the fears of hackers as reasons why Nigeria cannot adopt electronic transfer of election results. In fact, he said electronic transmission of results would ensure transparency in election. He also called on Nigerians, stakeholders, civil societies, among others, to join hands in securing the country against the activities of insurgency and banditry. Jonathan, who was the special guest of honour and guest speaker, made the calls when he delivered a lecture at the inauguration ceremony/lecture of the National Defence College (NDC), Course 30, i...

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his judgment, held that there was no where in the judgment of the Supreme Court of May 8, 2020, ordering the re-trial of Kalu or his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited. The judge added that he lacked the constitutional powers to translate or expand the order of the Supreme Court to include the names of Orji Kalu and his firm, Slok Nigeria Ltd, when the supreme court had not ordered their trial de novo. Benfica Vs. Barcelona: Benfica, Barca in search of first win

Benfica and Barcelona will both go in search of their first Champions League group stage wins of the season when they lock horns at the Estadio da Luz in Group E tonight. Jorge Jesus’s side played out a goalless draw with Dynamo Kiev on the opening day, whereas Barca succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. In a game where no fewer than 20 shots were fired – 12 of which came from Benfica’s attacking contingent – neither the Portuguese side nor Dynamo Kiev could break down the other’s defence during a goalless stalemate on matchday one. Jesus’s men had to do it the hard way to book their spot in the group stages after a one-year absence – overcoming Spartak Moscow and PSV in the qualifying rounds – but they have not let their domestic fortunes take a hit as their perfect start to the league season continued at the weekend. Summer signing Roman Yaremchuk bagged a brace before Joao Mario added gloss to the scoreline in a 3-1 success over Vitoria Guimaraes on Saturday – their sevent...

Juventus Vs Chelsea: Bianconeri look to trouble reigning UCL champs

Juventus will take on Chelsea in the group stages tonight, nine years after both sides met at this juncture.  The Blues, as we all know, will come into this tie as reigning champs. Interestingly, they were also the holders of the UCL nine years ago when they arrived in Turin for their group stage match, and by the time things were settled, Chelsea had made history for all the wrong reasons: by becoming the first title holder to exit the Champions League at the group stage. Of course, they went on to win the Europa League under Roberto di Matteo, and thus were able to redeem themselves after much embarrassment.  The same couldn’t be said for Juventus, who were unable to progress after being beaten both home and away in the quarterfinals by eventual Champions League winners Bayern Munich.  Now, nine years later, the two sides will meet once again. Both Juventus and Chelsea finished in fourth place last season, but the Blues arguably had the more successful campaign, win...

Nwangwu noted that the APGA-led government has touched every good thing handed over to it with leprous hands and relegated Anambra State from being the best in Nigeria to a laughing stock in the comity of states. “A...
