Aribo ranked 3rd best in Scottish league

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo has been recognized for his outstanding performances so far in the 2021-2022 campaign after he was rated as the third best player in the Scottish Premiership. According to Football Scotland citing PLZ Soccer, the Nigeria national teamer cracked the list of top ten standout players of the league campaign, coming third behind Celtic duo Callum McGregor and Kyogo Furuhashi. Strangely the Super Eagles number 10 was the only Rangers player deemed worthy of making the list. Nigeria-eligible players such as Rangers pair Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey, St Johnstone’s Efe Ambrose, Aberdeen midfielder Funso Ojo, Livingston defender Ayo Obileye, Motherwell striker Justin Amaluzor, Ross County’s Joseph Hungbo and St Mirren’s Scotland U21 star Ethan Erhahon have not been considered. So far this season, Aribo has started every single game contested by Steven Gerrard’s side in the Scottish top-flight, eleven in total, and was in action for 918 minutes. The 25...

PDP convention: Atiku tackles APC

From Ndubuisi Orji and Okwe Obi, Abuja Former Vice President Atiku Abubarkar, yesterday, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was never prepared for governance, hence the myriad of challenges currently bedeviling the country, under the ruling party. Atiku, who made this claim at the national convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held at Eagle Square, Abuja, said that the country is currently going through its most trying times, since independence in 1960. He, therefore, charged Nigerians to unite to wrest power from the APC in 2023, noting that the present administration has allegedly failed in every sector of the economy. According to him, “today, our country is going through the most trying and difficult period of its existence. I can tell you that I am 70 years plus, but I have never seen this country in such a very bad shape, so disunited, so much unemployment, so much insecurity in its history. “The social and security challenges in all corners along w...

No easy ride for Kemi, Clifford, Chidera on Lions’ Den TV show

Oluwakemi Shoyinka Abu never bargained for what hit her on the Lions’ Den business reality TV show last week. None of the Lions was willing to invest in her venture simply because her pitch failed the litmus test. The founder/CEO of Kelly Africana CraftShop, a chrocheting and wool business supply chain had requested for N10 million in return for a 10 percent stake in her business. But all the Lions turned down her offer. They weren’t convinced her business is investable, and again, her valuation was wrong. For instance, Oluwakemi claimed that all the products that came in since she started the business in June 2020, sold out. Yet, profit made in those nine months of her start-up was a paltry N500,000. One of the Lions, Mr. Kyari wanted clarification on how much she put into the business and her margin. He didn’t think she had a real business but rather, a trading line, which she can upscale. Mr. Dan equally shared a similar opinion. So also Mr. Paul who didn’t think her busines...

eNaira as Emefiele’s bell ringer

The launch of eNaira on October 25, should be seen for what it is: a bell ringer for deepening the digital currency bourse by Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele. It was also fitting that President Muhammadu Buhari personally launched the new Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). It shows seriousness and commitment of the Nigerian government to growing the nation’s digital economy. Though a late starter in the digital mobile market and even in broadband deployment, two key elements in electronic financial transactions, Nigeria has in recent years overtaken many countries. Year on year, electronic transactions in the financial markets have continued to nose up. A truly cashless Nigeria is evolving. Under Emefiele as CBN governor, it has been on significant ascendancy. Real proof is in the varnished queues in the deposit sections of commercial banks. The buzzing sounds of over-worked banknote counting machines have faded into history. Why carry bulky naira notes when you ...

Can INEC be trusted in Anambra?

On November 6, Anambra State will be tense as the people go to the poll to elect a successor to Governor Willy Obiano, whose two terms of office ends in January. Already the atmosphere pervading the state in recent times has been that of shock and great trepidation following unusual kind of violence that descended on this once peaceful state, taking lives of many people including prominent personalities. Heightened activities of unknown gunmen and intentions by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to stall the poll have contributed in no small measure to the atmosphere of uncertainty hovering over the state. By last account IPOB has threatened to declare a sit at home order which from what observers have seen is capable of affecting turnout of voters significantly, if eventually it is carried through. The federal government has said come rain, come shine, the poll must go on. The position meets public expectations and the reason is simple: tied to the poll are constitutional provis...

68th birthday: Archbishop Okeke appeals for family spirit in Anambra politics

Image
By Fr George Adimike By all measures, the 68th birthday of His Grace, The Most Rev’d Valerian Maduka Okeke, the Archbishop of Onitsha and the Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province fittingly underscores the centrality of grace in any meaningful human endeavour. The Archbishop effectively turned the birthday thanksgiving Mass into a veritable tool to pour out his heart in prayer. He expressed his deep passion for a new Anambra transformed into a progressive family of peoples, characterised by love, peace and harmony.  Baring his mind with deep faith, active hope and profound passion at the birthday Mass, the Archbishop, in a spirit-filled and faith-inspired moving message to the political class of Anambra, condemned all forms of destructive and desperate activities.  He called for the dethronement of politics of bitterness, politics of bloodletting, politics of division and favouritism, politics of exclusion, politics of excuses, politics of back-stabbing and poli...

The Christ life

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: Though Jesus was in the form of God, He did not feel that He was being robbed when He had to relinquish His position to become man. Most people would argue with the fact that why they would have to leave their place of glory to become man. Jesus did not hold on tightly to His position as God. He was not position-minded. All He wanted was ...

The cross: The way to eternal victory

Introduction In Old Testament times, the cross was the instrument and emblem of death, suffering, shame, ridicule and a curse (See Galatians 3:13). Jesus took these upon Himself when He suffered and died on the cross. But even beyond these, it was for Him the symbol of supreme sacrifice, complete obedience and the expression of God’s love (Philippians 2:6-8, John 3:16). Hence, in Christian times, the cross became the way to the crown, such that only by understanding and believing in God’s love through the cross can we really come to accept His Salvation, receive eternal life, and be delivered from eternal damnation. However, learning about the cross should not be once and for all; rather, it should be a constant gaze that warms our heart with affection for the One who died for us and strengthens our resolve to live for Him. In this study, we shall consider several types of the cross in antecedent as well as the practical implications of Jesus’ triumph on the cross of Calvary. THE T...

Why blood is central to disease diagnosis

By Enyeribe Ejiogu (enyeribee@ yahoo.com)                                                       Blood is a specialised fluid in the human body that transports oxygen and nutrients such as sugars, amino acids and lipoproteins to the cells and carries away carbon dioxide and other waste products. It also transports hormones. It is pumped by the heart to the lungs and all other parts of the body, and then returned to the heart for the process to be repeated, to sustain life. Sanguis, as blood is known in Latin, is so critical that without it there is no life. That is why the Bible says in Leviticus 17:11 “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Until the coming of Christ and his subsequent vicarious death on the cross of Calvary, blood of animals was used by Jews in altar sacrifices for sin. Even in traditional or pagan religion, blood was also use...

Self-determination: Lessions for Nigeria

By Rev. Fr. Evans Offor Nigeria has no historical agreement of any sort before its conjugality; no common creed, or system of beliefs to which all Nigerians subscribed to. The word, Nigeria, was dishonestly invented by an adulterous Flora Shaw in 1914, when most of those claiming to love Nigeria were not even congenital. Consequent upon this unhallowed deal, there has continued to be various and an assortment of frictional and suspecting voices, outrageous indices of ethnicity, religious bad blood, nepotism, marginalization and injustice of extraordinary enormousness.  Our religious sects should at it were, and if we really do have unaffected adherents, should be able to be sufficient to meet the fundamental needs of all peoples of Nigeria. Every religion in Nigeria emphasizes the right way of living, and at times, seems to cuddle as many religious responses as there are human essentials. They keep convinced sets of documents which are considered as assigning distinctive divine...

Nnamdi Kanu’s brother opens up: IPOB now in charge of Southeast

From Okey Sampson, Umuahia Mr Emmanuel Kanu is the brother of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.  In this interview, he revealed that some politicians  do not want agitation by IPOB to stop because they’re benefitting from it. He equally accused the Southeast governors of not being sincere about the activities of Nnamdi Kanu and his group in the region. While denying his brother is the cause of insecurity in the Southeast geo-political zone as alleged by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, he among other issues, proffered dialogue as solution to the present problem. Excerpts: Recently, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami accused the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu of being responsible for the insecurity in the Southeast. Could this be true? Nnamdi Kanu is not the problem we have in the Southeast, rather, youth unemployment, marginalization of the Southeast and nepotism, these are the prob...

Wike won’t leave abandoned projects, debts –Danagogo

From Tony John , Port Harcourt Secretary to the State Government of Rivers State, Tammy Danagogo, has affirmed that Governor Nyesom Wike will not abandon any project, in fulfilment of the NEW Rivers Vision Development Blueprint for the state. The SSG anchored his submission on the experience, competence, and courage of Governor Wike in implementing the principles of good governance and his determination to leave behind a worthy legacy for future generations. He made this assertion when members of the Ikwerre (Iwhuruohna) Journalistic Forum visited him to appreciate public officials, who are working and supporting the success story of Governor Wike. Danagogo further assured them that Governor Wike would not leave any debt behind for the next administration. He said: “Governor Wike I know will not leave behind abandoned projects, and he will not leave debts. He is doing a lot of projects, but all will be finished before the end of his tenure. This is because he is experienced in go...

Obiano inaugurates Anambra Int’l airport

From Obinna Odogwu , Awka Governor Willie Obiano yesterday inaugurated the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state. That inauguration, according to him, marked the commencement of commercial flight operations in the airport. The governor, who said that the airport has been rated one of the bests in Africa, revealed that the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has issued him relevant certificates approving flight operations in the airport. “The Federal Government has also approved some airlines for this airport and they include Air Peace, United Nigeria Airline, Dawa Air, Anap Jets, and Ibom Air. “For them to operate here, they have to set up their counter/desks here in the terminal building and other facilities to ensure that their customers are comfortable”, Obiano said, apparently to explain why no commercial flight came to the airport during the inauguration. The governor also revealed that more airlines wou...
