South Korea’s virus surge exceeds 7,000 for 3rd straight day

( AP ) New coronavirus infections in South Korea exceeded 7,000 for the third consecutive day on Friday in a record-breaking surge that has crushed hospitals and threatens the country’s goals to weather the pandemic without lockdowns. Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said during a virus meeting that the country could be forced to take “extraordinary” measures if the virus doesn’t slow soon. Officials issued administrative orders requiring hospitals around the country to designate 2,000 more beds combined for COVID-19 treatment. Kim said the government will also speed up the administration of booster shots by shortening the interval between the second and third vaccine injections from the current four or five months to three months starting next week. Around 41.5 million people, or 81% of the population of over 51 million, have been fully vaccinated, but only 10% have received booster shots. The delta-driven spread in recent weeks has been accompanied by a spike in hospitalizations and ...

53 die in horror crash of truck smuggling migrants in Mexico

( AP ) Rescue workers rushing to a highway accident found a horrific scene of death and injury after a freight truck jammed with as many as 200 migrants tipped over and crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge in southern Mexico. The migrants inside the cargo trailer were flipped, tossed and crushed into a pile that mingled the living and the dead. By late Thursday, the death toll stood at 53, and authorities said at least 54 people had been injured. It was one of the worst single-day death tolls for migrants in Mexico since the 2010 massacre of 72 migrants by the Zetas drug cartel in the northern state of Tamaulipas. Volunteer rescuers hauled bodies off the pile by their arms and legs, while some migrants scrambled and limped to extract themselves from the twisted steel sheets of the collapsed container. One young man, pinned in a heap of unmoving bodies, wriggled to free the lower half of his frame from the weight of the dead piled atop him, his face wrenched into a gr...

Nobody can stop me from becoming Akwa Ibom gov in 2023 –Godman Richman

From Romanus Ugwu, Abuja The name Godwill Richman may not really ring a bell in Akwa-Ibom State’s political circle or even in the fold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the country. However, for followers of the politics of Akwa Ibom, he has been a major force always working in the background in the state. In this interview with Daily Sun in Abuja, when he visited for one of the strategic and consultative meetings, he spoke on his ambition among other issues. Considering the fact that Alwa-Ibom is made up of heavyweight politicians, have you counted the cost of contesting in the 2023 governorship election? Let me state the obvious that there is a father before the son or the grandson and there can never be a grandson without a father. With all modesty, the political heavyweights you are referring to in Akwa-Ibom State are purely my products from 1999 till date. I started work with Ibrahim Babangida as the Military President at the age of 18 years. I brought in A...

I have little hope in Osimhen— Rohr

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed hopes that there is a possibility that Victor Osimhen could be in the Nigerian squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Osimhen has been Nigeria’s leading goal-getter since 2019 when former Manchester United loanee Odion Ighalo announced his retirement from international football. The 22-year-old was Nigeria’s highest goalscorer during the qualification for Cameroon 2021 and the group stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying series. But the youngster suffered multiple facial fractures on November 23 during an Italian Serie A clash against champions Inter Milan which all but ruled him out of action for three months. War against insecurity

In modern warfare, having sophisticated arms and ammunition is critical to any military force winning battles, especially against enemies of the state and other adversaries. Though nothing stops a country’s military from procuring weapons from any part of the world where they are produced, it is more befitting that nations, especially developing countries that are plagued by sundry violent crimes, boost their local capacity for military hardware production. For Nigeria, the long road to manufacturing military equipment and weapons to tackle terrorism, expecially Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) groups, did not start today. In NIgeria, the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, light tactical automobiles designed specifically to withstand improvised explosive device (IED) attacks and ambushes, were severally produced by the Defence Industry Corporation of Nigeria, (DICON) during the tenure of Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd) as the Chief of Army...

The problem with my Yoruba brethren

Late Senator Abraham Adesanya told us that Yoruba has no plural. We are not Yorubas, but simply Yoruba. That said, it’s time once more for Yoruba to rethink; that was probably why the renowned dramatist and singer, Chief Hubert Ogunde, waxed the hit song, Yoruba Ronu (Yoruba Think), when he realised the need for the ethnic group to wake up, and reposition during the dark days of the political turmoil in the old Western Region. Youruba have a big problem, indeed, multiple problems, from poor leadership to loss of direction, cultural pollution, laziness, cheap compromise and sheer stupidity. Under the late first Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Yoruba were pace-setters. Other ethnic groups have caught up with us and even overtaken us. Yoruba Ronu (Yoruba Think). We used to be the artisans Nigeria relied on to build houses, run public infrastructures, do all the maintenance chores, etcetera. Our people were the tradesmen who ran mechanic workshops, fixed vehicl...

Handling marital conflicts

By Ngozi Nwoke Marriage is a universal institution. Instituted by God in the garden of Eden, it is for companionship and procreation. However, many marriages are facing various challenges across the world. The situation is such that some couples merely live as flatmates, without intimacy or love for one another. Some conflicts even degenerate to the extreme, leading to maiming or killing of their spouses. So, in a bid to strengthen the bond between couples and reduce marital conflicts, the Men’s Christian Association (MCA) of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Lekki Parish, Lagos, last weekend, organised a get-together/couples’ night for those in marriage to mark the end of the year. At the event, which was well attended by couples, the president of the MCA, Mr. Orji Ukariwe, noted that the couples’ night was part of strategies to foster peace and address marital conflicts among couples. Ukariwe further stated that the rate of divorce had become alarming, to a point where bachel...

He blamed the party for the scourge of insecurity in the country and said only the PDP can right the wrongs of APC in 2023. Are you satisfied with the living condition of your people coupled with the skyrocketing prices of foodstuff in the market and current hardship in the country? Honestly I am not satisfied because if you look at the people, you will find out that they are highly impoverished; people are begging for intervention at all levels. But I have tried to do some little interventions going into empowerment of widows, people living with disabilities and we have also engaged youths by trying to teach them how they can fend for themselves and become economically self-reliant...
